Mine Planning Engineer – Scenic Southern Utah – Cedar City, Utah
Job Overview: Join our team as a Mine Planning Engineer in Southern Utah, where you will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and sustainable extraction of high-quality copper ore. Your strategic planning and technical expertise will drive the overall success, safety, and profitability of our mining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Mine Planning and Design: Develop and optimize short-term and long-term mine plans, incorporating strategies for managing complex sulfide and oxide ore bodies.
Design Mine pits, phases, sequences, waste dumps, stockpiles, and ROM in collaboration with geological teams to enhance ore quality and minimize dilution.
Provide insights on economic and production impacts of mine design changes, production timing, capital projects, and mining productivity.
Operational Support:
Oversee or review drill and blast designs, ensuring wall control measures are in place for stability.
Conduct efficiency studies on production, equipment, blasting, quality control, and recovery.
Lead capital and improvement projects, mentor junior staff, and support mine operations.
Track production metrics, evaluate performance, and collaborate with ground control engineers for safe and effective mining conditions.
Technical Analysis and Reporting:
Utilize mine planning software (e.g., Geovia Surpac, Whittle, Talpac, Micromine, Minesched) to model and simulate mining scenarios.
Assess different mining methods and equipment for optimal extraction of high-quality ore.
Implement new technologies and methodologies to enhance ore quality and overall efficiency.
Prepare and present technical reports and presentations on ore quality and planning strategies.
Maintain detailed records of mine plans and production data, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Project Management: Lead mine planning projects from conception to implementation, coordinating with contractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies. Participate in cost estimation and economic evaluations with a focus on optimizing ore quality.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on ore quality optimization.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with geology, metallurgy, and operations teams.
- Proficiency in mine planning and design software.
- Experience with drill and blast design, contractor management, and mining equipment operation.
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong project management skills.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Extensive experience in mine planning, particularly with complex sulfide and oxide ore bodies.
- Proven ability to prioritize ore quality in planning processes.
- Drill and blast expertise, including design, management, and wall control.
- Proficiency with mine planning software such as Geovia Surpac, Whittle, Minesched, or Talpac.
