5 Tips for a Killer Resume

Are you on the job hunt, but can’t seem to get past submitting your resume? Maybe you’re resume just doesn’t stand out to potential employers. This Tuesday we are coming at you with 5 tips for a killer resume. A resume is the first thing your potential employer will see, it needs to sell you as an amazing employee.

Tip 1

Customize your resume for every position you are applying for. If you are applying for a position at a software engineering firm, you will want to include terms that the company will recognize and experience that will make you stand out as the right employee.

Tip 2

Avoid mixing past and present tense in your resume. Resumes are normally in past tense, because you are referencing jobs that you worked in the past. The only time mixing tenses would be acceptable is if you are referencing a position you are currently working. Also, remember to avoid using “I”.
Example: “Achieved $14K in sales while working at XYZ Company” is better that “I achieved $14K in sales while working at XYZ Company.”

Tip 3

Don’t use an objective at the start of a resume unless it applies directly to the position you are applying for. Employers have dozens of resumes come across their desk during the workday, a resume that is direct is going to be easier for them to read and will make it more likely that you get a call.

Tip 4

Quantify everything in your resume. When it comes to sales numbers, cost savings, etc. numbers speak louder than words. Tell the potential employer exactly how much money you saved a company or how much money you earned for that company.

Tip 5

Finally, make sure that you proofread your resume before you send it out to a potential employer. Spelling and grammar need to be perfect. Errors in spelling and grammar can trip up a reader and distract from the actual document and what you might be trying to say. At the end of the day spelling and grammar errors look unprofessional.
